In 2025, Ronald McDonald House Charities’ 25-family Portland East House underwent an interior redesign to update and improve the welcoming experience it offers families traveling to the Portland Metro for medical care. As part of the new design, the team needed illustrated mural designs that were digitally printed and installed in the dining room, 4 main corridors, and guest rooms.
Our goal was to create murals that contribute to a comforting, hopeful, and calming atmosphere, helping families who are navigating challenging times feel more at ease during their stay. The designs reflect Oregon’s natural landscapes and promote a sense of connection, healing, and resilience.
Working off of the theme of Oregon’s landscapes, we had five “Zones” in the house designated with the following themes: The Gorge, Mountains, Desert, Forest, and Coast. We developed five characters inspired by these zones - a Beaver for the Gorge, Elk for the Mountains, Jackrabbit for the Desert, Bear for Forest, and Pelican for the Coast. Throughout the house, these five characters travel through each mural together and help one another on a journey. In their home habitat, each character uses a special tool to help the rest of the group with a specific challenge, representing the idea that everyone needs a little help along the way, and everyone has something to offer their community.
